Amenorrhea
What is Amenorrhea?
Primary amenorrhea is defined as no periods by age 14 in the absence of development of secondary sexual characteristics, or no periods by age 16 regardless of the development of secondary sexual characteristics. Secondary amenorrhea is defined as absence of periods for 6 months in a woman who has previously been menstruating.
What causes Amenorrhea?
The main causes of Amenorrhea include:
- Weight loss or anorexia
- Hypothyroidism
- Hypopituitarism
- Elevated androgens
- Elevated prolactin
- Cushing syndrome
- Hypothalamic amenorrhea
- Genetic syndromes
- Tumors, infection, trauma or irradiation of the central nervous system
How is Amenorrhea diagnosed?
The diagnosis of amenorrhea is extremely complex and is dependant on the underlying cause.
Western treatment of Amenorrhea:
Oral contraceptives are the most common treatment, and serve to regulate menstruation. Application of the appropriate treatment of underlying conditions is also of high importance.
Chinese medicine treatment of Amenorrhea:
