Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer (GIFT)
What is Gamete Intra-fallopian Transfer (GIFT)?
GIFT is an ART procedure in which eggs are removed from a woman’s ovaries, combined with washed sperm, and then both eggs and sperm are placed into the woman’s fallopian tube(s) through a small incision in her abdomen. The procedure is performed by laparoscopy. It can be used as an alternative to IVF for all non-tubal causes of infertility but is not used when there is severe male factor or immunologic infertility.
Who is a candidate for GIFT? Ideal candidates for GIFT include:
- Couples with unexplained infertility
- Women with mild endometriosis.
- Male infertility (not severe)
- Couples who have had failed donor insemination
What is the success rate of GIFT?
The success rate after GIFT is similar to that of in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. Some specialists claim a higher success rate with GIFT compared to IVF.

Chinese Medicine Treatment for patients undergoing GIFT:
After the GIFT procedure, patients are usually given hormonal supplements to aid implantation by their western doctor. In Chinese medicine, we combine acupuncture, Reproductive Organ Massage and herbs to assist with implantation, increase your success rate, and to hedge the negative side effects of the western drugs. The Reproductive Organ Massage is used to unblock any physical blockages in the pelvic cavity and to influence the thickness of the uterine lining and to relax the patient. Also, prior to the insemination, acupuncture and herbs are used to influence both the quality of the egg and the sperm. |
