Immunology Factors

Between 20 and 25 percent of all repeated miscarriages are due to immunological problems. It has been found that 86.6% of women with elevated Natural Killer Cells have had a successful pregnancy when treated with preconception IVIG, aspirin and heparin.

What are immunology factors?

  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Elevated natural killer cells
  • Anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA)
  • C-reactive protein
  • Antiphospholipid antibodies
  • Antithyroid antibodies
  • Antisperm antibodies-can happen in both men and women

What are the indicators for needing Immune Testing?

  • Two miscarriages and two IVF or GIFT failures after age 35 or three miscarriages or IVF or GIFT failure before age 35
  • Poor egg production from a stimulated cycle (less than 6 eggs)
  • One blighted ovum
  • Idiopathic infertility
  • Previous immune problems (ANA positive, rheumatoid arthritis, and/or lupus)
  • Previous pregnancies that have shown retarded fetal growth
  • One living child and repeat miscarriages while attempting to have a second child.

What are the immune tests and what do they mean?

  • DQ Alpha measures whether the DNA of the couple is too closely matched.
  • Leukocyte Antibody Detection is a more expansive test of the DQ Alpha
  • Reproductive Immunophenotype checks for the presence of Natural Killer Cells
  • Cell Designation tests: CD-3, CD-4, CD-8, CD-19, CD-56, CD3/IL2-r, and CD19/CD5
  • ANA (Antinuclear Antibody) checks for problems similar to lupus and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Anti-DNA/Histone Antibodies
  • APA (Antiphospholipid Antibodies) and APTT both test for clotting factors
  • Natural Killer Cell Assay determines the strength of the Natural Killer Cells
  • TJ6 Protein is another cell in the lining of the uterus that produces a protein called TJ6. The TJ6 protein has the function of controlling NK cells.
  • Lupus Anticoagulant Antibody
  • Hormone Antibody Assay
  • Antithyroid antibodies

Western Treatment of immunological factors:

  • Steroids
  • IVIG
  • Anticoagulants-heparin
  • Aspirin
  • LIT - not currently done in the USA

Chinese Medicine Treatment of Immunological factors:

Chinese medicine, acupuncture, herbs and Reproductive Organ Massage strive to rebalance the immune system whether it is in hypo or hyper functioning. For 1000’s of years, TCM has offered effective treatments for immune factor infertility by treating the root cause rather than focusing on the specific auto antibody.
