Ovulation Factors
The most common ovulation factors are:
- Irregular ovulation or anovulation
- Emotional stress
- Strenuous exercise
- Excessive weight loss or weight gain
- Hypothalamus is not releasing GRH
- Pituitary is not secreting normal levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), or prolactin
- Thyroid gland disorders (hypo or hyper)
Western Treatment of ovulation factors depends on the exact cause but usually consists of:
- Clomiphene citrate (Clomid)-stimulates gonadotropin release, especially LH. It causes maturation of ovarian follicles with more estradiol and this causes a further LH surge and ovulation. Usually 90% of women achieve successful ovulation with this drug therapy. However, the downside in some women is that it causes ovarian cyst formation.
- Human menopausal gonadotropins-stimulates ovulation
- Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GRH)-used if patient has hypothalamic malfunction
Negative impacts of Western Medication:
- Abdominal pressure or fullness
- Cysts on the ovaries
- Headaches
- Hot flashes
- Mood changes
- Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome
Chinese Medicine treatment:
Chinese medicine treatment will consist of acupuncture to stimulate follicular growth and maturation and to work with the brain and the controlling functions of the hypothalamus. In addition, stress management techniques and Reproductive Organ Massage will be used to release pent up tension in the lower abdomen that hampers follicular development. Also, herbal and dietary counseling will be implemented to address the underlying pattern that the patient exhibits. |
