Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

More than one million women in the United States-most of them in their teens and twenties are diagnosed with acute PID every year.

What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or PID?

PID is a bacterial infection of the upper female genital tract, including the uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries.

What Causes Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?

PID can be caused by several different bacteria. The two most important are the bacteria which cause Chlamydia and gonorrhea. These bacteria are usually transmitted through sexual intercourse with an infected partner. PID can also be caused by and intrauterine device (IUD), complication from earlier pregnancies or infection following any reproductive tract surgery.

What are the symptoms of acute Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?

The usual symptoms are fever, chills, lower abdominal and pelvic pain, painful sexual intercourse and vaginal discharge or bleeding. These symptoms often begin a few days after the start of your period, particularly when a STD is the cause of infection. Chronic Pelvic Inflammatory Disease which can be caused by candida, chlamydia, and t-strain mycoplasm can have no symptoms or mild intermittent symptoms.

How is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Diagnosed?

PID is usually diagnosed by the presence of an elevated white-blood-cell count, and a positive bacterial culture of the cervical discharge and a physical examination. PID is commonly misdiagnosed as appendicitis or a twisted or ruptured ovarian cyst. In these situations, laparoscopy is used as well as the above mentioned diagnostic tools. If you suspect you have PID, please consult your doctor immediately to prevent future fertility problems.

How does Pelvic Inflammatory Disease affect your fertility?

PID can produce chronic scarring and impair the ability to conceive.

Western Treatment of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease:

The usual treatment for PID is antibiotics. Most women take oral antibiotics such as intramuscular ceftriaxone, and oral doxycycline and metronidazole for a period of 10 to 14 days, after which they are cured. A woman’s sexual partner should also be treated with antibiotics.

Chinese Medicine Treatment:

Usually the Chinese medicine practitioner does not directly treat acute PID, but can support your body and immune system and aid recovery. Chinese medicine, herbs, Reproductive Organ Massage and acupuncture can help with chronic PID and the scarring that PID produces. These treatments can help reduce the negative side effects to your fertility.
