Services: Diet & Nutrition

Due to the increasing toxicity of our environment and the declining nutrient value of our food supply, there have been dramatic increases in reproductive problems and degenerative diseases. It is often possible to reverse these trends by using diet and nutrition. Chinese medicine is able to differentiate and diagnosis imbalances in your body and can create an individualized dietary plan for each patient. These dietary recommendations are an integral part of our protocol, but please be aware these are only guidelines and are not intended to be rigid.

Your acupuncturist will give you additional handouts of foods for your particular condition based on food properties and tastes from a Chinese perspective. We carry high quality organic supplements such as Standard Process and we will recommend them based on your individual needs.

General Dietary Food Guidelines:

  • Make sure to intake plenty of calories throughout the day. Average should be 2300 calories per day preconception and 2500-2700 calories per day post conception.
  • Carbohydrates should be approximately 45-55% of the diet or approximately 1200-1400 calories.
  • Protein should be approximately 12-14% of the diet or approximately 200 calories or 45-50 grams.
  • Fats should be approximately 30% or less of the diet or approximately 500 calories.
  • Sodium should be between 1000-3000mg daily.
  • Lightly cook all foods to make them more easily digestable.
  • Make sure all foods and drinks are room temperature or warmer.
  • Try to eat more alkaline foods versus acidic foods.

Foods that enhance fertility:

  • Use organically grown food whenever possible because it is more nutritional dense than processed food.
  • Eat plenty of organic vegetables and fruits.
  • Make sure you get an adequate amount of protein each day; especially important for vegetarians. Make sure meat, fish, poultry and eggs are free range and hormone free.
  • Sprouts, nuts, seeds, and eggs are especially good sources of protein for vegetarians.
  • Complex carbohydrates-whole grains like brown rice, oats, quinoa, barley, spelt.
  • Eat phytoestrogens, including beans such as lentils, chickpeas and Soya products.
  • Eat oily foods, including fish, nuts, seeds and oils.
  • Increase intake of fiber.
  • Increase intake of water.

  • Limit fruit juices. Whole fruit is preferable to juices for the fiber content and lowered sugar levels.
